The Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) is a national initiative designed to promote the development of personalized medicine and personalized health in Switzerland. The SAMS, together with the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, heads the implementation of the Initiative on behalf of the Federal Government. SPHN will build the infrastructure necessary to exploit the diversity of health-related data for research and innovation.

The Swiss federal authorities identified the opportunities and challenges of personalized health and personalized medicine and launched in 2017 a national funding initiative with the Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation (ERI). The mission of the Swiss Personalized Network (SPHN) is to create infrastructure for connecting medical data from partner institutions (hospitals with research centers, universities etc.). The initiative focuses on the networking of existing information systems in hospitals. The aim is to ensure the interoperability of clinical patient data for research purposes. In addition to the technical aspects, greater emphasis is being placed on data protection and data security issues. The SAMS assumes organisational, legal and financial responsibility for the SPHN.

The focus of the SAMS Bulletin 1/2021, available in French and German, is dedicated to a mid-term review after the conclusion of the first funding period.

On the SPHN website you will find comprehensive information on the goals, funding, network partners, etc. of the initiative.

The SPHN Data Coordination Center (SPHN-DCC): Consolidating the SPHN infrastructures beyond 2024

One year before the official ending of the initiative, SPHN has published a comprehensive report outlining strategies for ensuring the sustainable continuation of the SPHN data infrastructures beyond 2024. The report further formulates the expectations and needs of the Swiss research community concerning the activities of the SPHN-DCC, promoting the efficient and responsible secondary use of health data. The report is written in English with a summary in German and French. Printed copies can be ordered free of charge (format: A4).
